Reminder: Don't Get Defensive!

Our family night lesson on Monday was on Elder Ballard's commencement address at BYU about not getting defensive (found on front page of LDS.org.) There are some excellent points that are given pertaining to sharing what we do believe rather than defending the church against rumors or negative remarks. I think this lesson came into my mind because last night Ben and I had dessert with two friends who recently got married. They are about our age and the big question between most of our friends right now is, "What are your plans for the future?" This of course led to a conversation about children and the husband had valid concerns about his wife being at home with children while he is at work. Concerns like: what will she do all day, will it be hard to come home to a wife who has not been talking to others and I have been doing that all day? He is a very intelligent guy and very inquisitive. He asked what I did to fill my day.

The question caught me off guard because it could come off as offensive but I know he didn't mean it like that. I told him that that was a concern to me as well when I was pregnant in school. But it has been amazing to me how Heavenly Father prepared me for my role in the home. I have never felt bored, lazy, or of less worth since I have been a stay-at-home mom. I have felt tired, very tired sometimes, but it has always been worth it. Troy has brought 1,000 x more happiness than I could have imagined. I also have been gratfeul to be able to increase my knowledge base on both temporal and spiritual subjects.

I know there is a difference in having a mother in the home. It would be very easy for me to get a part-time job right now and is sometimes tempting to be able to build up my resume and use the skills I just got a degree in. BUT I know I am doing my family a greater service by being at home. So, when people ask what I do, I proudly respond, "I get to stay at home with my baby boy."

Speaking of my baby boy, look at how much he as grown!

  1. FIVE MONTHS OLD??? Reed said he needs a mustache he is getting so old! Way to grow little guy. He has changed so much...it's amazing! I've been thinking about the haircutting job and I hope it went good! Soon you'll be an old pro and it'll take you less than a half hour. :)

  2. I'm so glad you were able to say those things to that couple and hopefully help them understand. The Lord wouldn't ask mothers to stay home if it was bad for us or ruined us. I suppose it could, if we let it, just like going out and getting a job could be bad if we let it. You're awesome.

Troy has grown so much! He is so darn cute! I wish we were closer so he and Brynlee could grow up knowing each other. They'd have so much fun and of course we would have way TOO much fun! :)
